Facelift & NeckLift

In New Orleans

As we grow older, the face we see looking back in the mirror can feel more and more like that of a stranger. The lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin that develop with age can make you feel like a completely different person, unlike the youthful, vibrant woman or man you still are.

While these effects of aging are completely natural, Dr. Sean Weiss in New Orleans performs facelift and neck lift surgery to help address the signs of aging in a way that enhances your natural beauty.

What Is a Facelift & Neck Lift?

tan divider

Facelift surgery is synonymous with facial plastic surgery because of its rejuvenating effect on your appearance. The facelift (or rhytidectomy, as it’s technically referred to) is performed to address common signs of aging in the mid to lower regions of the face. These include wrinkles, folds, jowls, and loose or sagging skin. The procedure tightens loose facial tissues and removes excess skin to reduce wrinkles and restore definition along the jawline.

A neck lift (or lower rhytidectomy) addresses the same concerns in the skin and muscles of the neck. These procedures work by removing excess skin and reshaping the underlying tissue to create younger and tighter facial contours.

Dr. Weiss often performs these two procedures together as a combined surgery to create a naturally youthful, well-balanced appearance, from the mid-face to the collarbone.

Types of Facelifts

Deep Plane Facelift
A deep-plane facelift is designed to lift and tighten the deep facial and neck tissues for a beautifully rejuvenated appearance and long-lasting results. Dr. Weiss often combines this type of facelift with a mandibuloplasty or a chin implant to further enhance the definition of the neck and jawline while restoring midface volume.

Mid-Face Lift
A mid-face lift targets the middle region of the face (cheek and under-eye areas). With age, the facial fat pad located high in your cheeks begins to descend and sag, resulting in a sunken or droopy appearance. Dr. Weiss performs a mid-face lift to elevate and reposition this soft tissue and fat pad higher on the cheek, creating a fuller, more youthful appearance.

Mid-face enhancements can be accomplished alone or in combination with the Deep Plane Facelift technique.

Mini Facelift
A mini facelift is a less invasive alternative to traditional facelift surgery, focusing primarily on wrinkles and sagging skin around the lower face. Dr. Weiss recommends the mini facelift to address the jawline and correct marionette lines (the lines extending from the corners of the mouth to the chin).

Facelift & Neck Lift Surgery Before and After

Am I a Good Candidate for Facelift & Neck Lift Surgery?

Facelift and neck lift surgery can be an effective option for healthy women and men who want to improve the appearance of lines, wrinkles, or loose, sagging skin in the mid-to-lower face and neck. Dr. Weiss performs various types of facelifts depending on the severity of your concerns and the areas of your face where you are experiencing them.

Those considering a facelift should:

  • Have moderate to advanced facial aging signs, including jowls, deep nasolabial folds, or loose neck skin
  • Be in good overall health
  • Have sufficient skin elasticity despite some sagging or looseness
  • Have a strong bone structure
  • Be between the ages of 40 and 75
  • Maintain realistic expectations

Your consultation with Dr. Weiss will help to determine if you are a good candidate for facelift and neck lift surgery, as well as the best approach for your individual procedure.

A facelift will not address age-related concerns with the upper face/forehead or around the eyes. For these areas of the face, Dr. Weiss may recommend a brow lift or upper or lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). These procedures can be performed in combination with a facelift or as individual procedures.

Patients experiencing post-weight-loss facial changes

Many patients who have experienced rapid weight loss with GLP-1 medications find these procedures particularly beneficial for restoring facial volume and contour.

Significant weight reduction can lead to facial hollowing, sagging, and a deflated appearance often called “Ozempic Face.” Facelift and neck lift surgery effectively addresses this by tightening lax skin and repositioning underlying tissues. Dr. Weiss may recommend combining surgery with fat grafting or dermal fillers to restore lost volume. Regular Botox treatments can also help maintain smoothness and prevent new expression lines from forming.

What to Expect from Facelift & Neck Lift Surgery

Sean R. Weiss, MD, FACS, is experienced in performing facelift and neck lift surgery for different goals and people. He will work with you one-on-one to create a personalized treatment plan based on your desired outcome and unique facial appearance.

The procedure

The exact steps of your surgery will vary depending on what is discussed during your consultation and your specific type of facelift.

During your surgery, Dr. Weiss will make discreet incisions hidden along the hairline, behind the ear, and/or beneath the chin. The location of your incisions will vary based on the type of procedure being performed. Dr. Weiss will then work to tighten the underlying muscles and remove any excess fatty tissue. Excess skin is then carefully removed, and the face and neck are recontoured for a naturally youthful appearance.

Surgery times vary depending on the type of facelift. For example, a mini facelift will take less time than a full traditional facelift. Combination procedures can also be performed as a single surgery or spread out over time.

Does a facelift/neck lift require anesthesia?

Your facelift or neck lift with Dr. Weiss will be performed at our on-site surgery suite under local anesthesia, or at a nearby surgery center under general anesthesia.

How long does a facelift procedure take?

The average time it takes to perform a facelift is three to six hours.

Minimally invasive alternatives and complementary procedures

In some cases, surgery may not yet be needed to achieve your personal goals. Dr. Weiss also offers a variety of non-surgical facial treatments and procedures at his practice to help address a wide range of concerns.

If you are experiencing early signs of aging, such as lines or wrinkles, Botox®, or facial fillers, such as Juvéderm® or Sculptra®, can be viable treatment options. A fat transfer may also be a good alternative if you are experiencing volume loss in specific areas of the face and want to increase fullness with minimal surgery.

Depending on your skin type and the depth of treatment, laser skin resurfacing can enhance facelift results and diminish the appearance of wrinkles, scars (such as acne scars), and discoloration while smoothing and tightening the surface of your skin.

In addition to non-invasive procedures, some patients elect to combine a facelift and neck lift with other surgical procedures to enhance their final outcome. These adjunct procedures may include:

Dr. Weiss will discuss all of your treatment options and work with you to develop a plan that can best achieve your goals.

Facelift & Neck Lift Recovery Process and Follow-Up

Immediately following facelift and necklift surgery, a compression dressing is applied. Dr. Weiss frequently applies a suction drain as well, which helps vacuum-seal the wounds and stabilize the healing process. The dressing and suction device are removed in the office the day after the procedure. An elastic support dressing will be provided for you to wear while you continue to heal.

How should I sleep after a facelift/neck lift procedure?

During the first few days after your procedure, you will need to sleep with your head slightly elevated at a 30-degree angle. It will help minimize swelling in the face and neck. You will also be required to clean the incisions daily with warm soapy water, then with peroxide. After each cleaning, ointment is applied to the facelift incisions to promote rapid healing and minimize visible scarring.

One week after facelift or neck lift surgery, Dr. Weiss sees patients in the office to check the healing process. After evaluating the healing process, non-dissolvable stitches are removed. Most patients are beginning to turn the corner at this point, as bruising and swelling are beginning to resolve.

Two weeks after the procedure, a follow-up visit is scheduled to remove any residual stitches. At this point, most patients have recovered enough to get back to their usual routines. The majority of bruising and swelling is resolved, and patients begin to realize the final results.

While each patient will experience varying degrees of swelling and bruising, most can return to work within seven to 10 days after facelift surgery. Some patients return sooner if the bandages do not bother them. A mini facelift or a local anesthesia facelift generally has a faster recovery time.

Facelift and neck lift results

After surgery, you will experience some initial bruising and swelling, and incision lines will be visible and raised. Bruising and swelling will dissipate within the first week or two. Over the next several months, your incision lines will gradually lighten and flatten. Given their discreet placement, scars from a facelift are kept out of sight along your natural skin creases or within your hairline.

The results of your face and neck lift will continue to improve. As your skin heals, you will begin to notice smoother contours and a younger, rejuvenated appearance that still looks like you. The effects of facelift and neck lift surgery are permanent; however, you will continue to age naturally. While no surgery can completely freeze the effects of aging, this procedure can help you to age gracefully and continue to look as youthful as you feel.

Many patients also choose supportive treatments to help maintain their results. Routine Botox sessions can soften expression lines and prevent new wrinkles from forming, helping your facelift and neck lift look smoother for longer. Dr. Weiss can recommend a simple plan that fits your facial structure and overall goals.

Benefits of Getting a Facelift & Neck Lift

Why patients get a facelift

A facelift can be used to help address a variety of age-related concerns in the mid to lower areas of the face, including:

  • Sagging skin
  • Loose skin
  • Moderate to severe lines and wrinkles (such as nasolabial folds developing at the nose and corners of the mouth)
  • Jowls

  • Droopy, tired appearance

Why patients get a neck lift

A neck lift can be performed alone or in conjunction with a facelift to correct signs of aging beneath the chin and along the neck, including:

  • Neck bands
  • Loss of the cervicomental angle (the angle between the chin and neck)

Why patients try local anesthesia facelift with Dr. Weiss

In some cases, local anesthesia may be an option for your facelift. Dr. Weiss has developed specialized techniques that allow him to perform full-face-lifting procedures under local anesthesia or oral sedation.

"
!

What's the difference between a facelift and a neck lift?

A facelift addresses the lower two-thirds of the face, including jowls and deep folds. A neck lift specifically targets sagging skin and muscle bands below the jawline. Combining both procedures provides the most comprehensive rejuvenation.
"
!

How long do facelift and neck lift results last?

Results typically last 10-15 years, though individual results vary based on genetics, lifestyle, and skincare habits. While surgery turns back the clock, natural aging continues, so maintaining results with Botox and good skin care helps prolong your outcome.
"

How can Botox help maintain results after a facelift or neck lift?

Botox prevents dynamic wrinkles from deepening by relaxing the muscles that cause expression lines. Regular treatments every three to four months help maintain the smooth, youthful appearance achieved through surgery. Dr. Weiss often recommends Botox as part of a long-term maintenance plan.
"
!

Is a facelift or neck lift recommended after weight loss from GLP-1 medications?
